We know this can be an overwhelming process, but we've got you! Although everyone's journey is different, many people have similar struggles. Keeping those devices on, especially for extended periods of time, is a particularly common pain point. As you go through your child's hearing journey with HA, CI, or both, your retention options will probably change along the way.

General Expectations by Age

0-3 Months

Although early on babies are not generally exploring with their hands, they are moving their head, so their hearing aid can be knocked off. Beginning to use a retention method early on is helpful for keeping track of their device, as well as getting them used to wearing the retention product.

3-6 Months

Your baby may start to learn to explore at this stage, and they may unintentionally knock their device off while learning to control their hands and beginning to develop motor skills. Be sure to keep the battery door locked as they are poisonous if swallowed, and one of your little one's favorite ways to explore will be to put things in their mouth.

6-12 Months

As your child starts to gain finer control of their hands, they may continue to knock their devices out or take them out deliberately to put them directly in their mouth. Again be sure to keep the battery door locked, because no matter what you do there will always be a chance a device will end up in a little mouth.

12-18 Months

This is around the time your child will likely really be in the "pull them off" phase! Unfortunately there is no miracle solution on how to get through this stage of your journey. I can only suggest that you stay calm, be consistent, and keep trying.

18-24 Months

Now your toddler is learning independence. Taking the devices off has probably not stopped yet, and now that they are typically full of energy and constantly on the movie, you may want to add an additional retention item. A retention cord, clip, or necklace may do the trick and keep devices from getting lost even if your toddler removes them.

24+ Months

Your child may now really start to understand the benefits of their device and leaving them on more regularly, though caps and headbands will still be helpful for keeping the device in for longer durations. Now that your child is a little older, you may only need a retention cord, clip, or necklace instead of multiple retention options at once.
